Student Voice

Courtyard Freedom

By Vy V.

For many students, the school day is filled with routines that leave us with no time to be free as we rush to classes, through the hallways, and into cafeteria lines. But now, there’s a refreshing change: the opportunity to eat outside in the courtyard.

This has quickly become a favorite part of the day for some students looking to recharge, connect, and enjoy a different environment.

Stepping into the courtyard offers more than just a place to eat, it provides a break from the noise and structure of indoor spaces. The open air, natural light, and change of scenery can boost mood and reduce stress, helping students return to class more focused and energized. Instead of crowded tables, students can enjoy sunlight, fresh air, and a sense of calm that’s hard to find inside.

The courtyard also creates a more relaxed atmosphere. Students have the chance to gather with friends, laugh, and build connections in a space that feels less confined. It encourages positive interactions and gives everyone a chance to reset during the day. For some, it’s also an opportunity to enjoy a quieter lunch away from the usual hustle.

Of course, with this opportunity comes responsibility. Taking care of the environment means this privilege can continue and even expand in the future.

Having access to the courtyard may seem like a small change, but its impact is meaningful. It promotes well-being, strengthens community, and gives students a moment of freedom during a structured day. Sometimes, all it takes is a little fresh air to make a big difference.
